 In Community News

Lisa Winkler, Coalition for a Drug Free Carroll County, appeared before the Board with People Leading America’s Youth (PLAY) group members Nate Allen, Celia Meek and Emma Russel. Ms. Meek spoke to Commissioners about the groups activities for this week which included a visit to the Bell-Herron Middle School to present an interactive “wheel of facts” during their lunchtime. The facts were designed to bring drug and alcohol awareness to the students. Mr. Allen discussed how the group is part of a statewide initiative where youth from schools statewide get together to talk about misuse and abuse of drugs and alcohol in schools today. Mr. Allen gave details about the Majority Rally in Columbus which is a drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse march that the group partakes in yearly. Mr. Allen explained that Carrollton’s PLAY group meets every Friday and is compromised of approximately 20 students. Mr. Allen also told Commissioners that last year he was given an opportunity to go to Washington DC for a week as a representative from Carrollton High School. Mr. Allen also told the Board that the group is involved in several community events throughout the year.

Commissioners unanimously adopted the proclamation which was provided by the students to bring awareness to National Alcohol and Drug Acts Week.
